Bone Marrow Collection Increases Diverstiy of Donors
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The National Marrow Donor Program and the Asian American Donor Program held an event Sunday morning at the Tech Museum in San Jose, outreaching to people from ethnic communities to donate bone marrow. The Sing Tao Daily reports that Baojun Zhu, of the Asian American Donor Program, said there are 7.4 million people willing to donate their marrow registered with the two programs, and 73 percent are Caucasian, 7.2 percent are Asian and 5.2 are Latino. Zhu said minorities have less information available about marrow donation in their communities, so they may have hesitations about donating. Many people from ethnic communities took the required medical exam and donated marrow at the event after learning the information.
